Introduction to SEO

What is SEO?

SEO is the abbreviation of Search Engine Optimization and it is a process to bring relevant visitors to your site by following the rules and regulations of search engines. The traffic which comes through SEO is unpaid, it is known as natural traffic or organic traffic.

Whenever you enter a question in a search engine and hit ?enter? you get a list of web results that contain that query term. Users normally tend to visit internet sites that are at the top of this kind of list as they understand those to be more relevant to the query. If you?ve ever wondered why many of these websites rank better than the others then you need to know that it is because of a powerful web marketing technique called???Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

SEO is a method which helps search engines locate and rank your website higher than the millions of other sites in response to a search query. Search engine optimization thus helps you acquire traffic from search engines.

This SEO tutorial covers all the necessary information you need to know about Search Engine Optimization ? what is it, how does it work and differences in the ranking criteria of major search engines.

How Search Engines Work

The first basic reality you need to know to learn Search engine optimization is that search engines usually are not humans. While this might be obvious for everybody, the actual differences between how humans and search engines view web pages are not same. Unlike humans, engines like google are text-driven. Although technology advances rapidly, search engines are far from smart creatures that can notice the beauty of a cool design or enjoy the seems and movement in movies. Instead, search engines like google crawl the Web, looking at particular site products (mainly text) to obtain an idea what a website is about. This short explanation is not the many precise because as we will see next, search engines carry out several activities to be able to deliver search results : crawling, indexing, processing, calculating relevancy, as well as retrieving.

First, search engines crawl the Web to see what is there. This task is performed by a piece of software, called a crawler or a spider (or Googlebot, as is the case with Google). Spiders follow links from one page to another and index everything they find on their way. Having in mind the number of pages on the Web (over 20 billion), it is impossible for a spider to visit a site daily just to see if a new page has appeared or if an existing page has been modified, sometimes crawlers may not end up visiting your site for a month or two.

What you can do is to check what a crawler sees from your site. As already mentioned, crawlers are not humans and they do not see images, Flash movies, JavaScript, frames, password-protected pages and directories, so if you have tons of these on your site, you?d better run the Spider Simulator below to see if these goodies are viewable by the spider. If they are not viewable, they will not be spidered, not indexed, not processed, etc. ? in a word they will be non-existent for search engines.

Useful WordPress Plugins

There are several thousands of WordPress plugins in the WordPress community and new plugins are coming out each and every day. However, not all plugins are useful, in fact some are very bad written that will mess up your site or harm your WordPress installation. So how do you know which plugins are right for you? Well, here is a list of plugins those are found useful. Hopefully you will find something useful here.

WP Cache

To save your SQL server resources, WP Cache works by caching Worpress pages and storing them in a static file for serving future requests directly from the file rather than loading and compiling the whole PHP code and then building the page from the database. It is a very useful plugin if you have a high traffic site or low performance server.

WP eCommerce

Want to sell stuffs on your blog? You must check out this WP eCommerce plugin byInstinct. It is an Ajax powered shopping cart, very easy to use. You can setup your shop in minutes through the Admin panels.
Intouch Ajax contact form
I’ve been using this contact form for over a year. It works very good and filters all the spams. Seriously, NO SPAM at all. It also allows you to customize the email subject, thank you messages, and adds addition form fields.
Secure and Accessible Contact Form
Another contact form by Mike Cherim and Mike Jolley. Although, I have never used this contact form before, but I’ve been hearing good rating on them. So, give it a shoot.

Sideblog

One of the popular WordPress plugins, Sideblog is the best way to post short notes on the sidebar. I use it for Best Web Gallery. It gives you options to define the sideblog category, how many entries to display, and whether to exclude from RSS feeds.

WP PageNavi

WP PageNavi adds a better paging navigation to your WordPress site. It is nice if you have a lot of posts because it allows your visitors to skip from page to page. I use it onN.Design Studio and Best Web Gallery.

Sociable

Sociable appends a list of the social bookmarking sites (ie. Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit) at the end of your posts and allows your visitors to bookmark. I used this plugin before and it worked very well.

Ajax Post Rating

WP Post Ratings adds a 5-star Ajax rating system to your posts/pages. It works like a charm. Hint: most CSS gallery sites use this plugin.

Ajax Comment

A very simple yet effect Ajax comment plugin, it checks if all fields filled correctly (so your visitors will never see the default error messages), and also makes sure to avoid comment duplication, and has flood protection capabilities as well.

Ajax Inline Comment

This plugin gives your visitors an Ajax live comment preview. It is great if they need to enter HTML tags in your comments. So, no more syntax errors in your comments.

Ajax Polls

As seen on Web Designer Wall, it adds a Ajax poll system to your site. It is very flexible with a lot of features. Layout is completely customizable via Admin panels. It also allows you to archive the polls. Highly recommended!

Gravatar 2 Plugin

It basically display a Gravatar (globally recognized avatar) of your commenters. In case you don’t know yet, Automattic (WordPress creator) just acquired Gravatar and the future Gravatar services will run faster and bigger sizes (up to 128px).

Digg This

Digg this is a WordPress plugin that detects incoming links from Digg.com to your wordpress post and automatically display a link back to the digg post, for people to digg your story. When a digg is first recognized, it will send an email to the site’s admin.
Subscribe to comment
Subscribe to Comments 2.1 is a plugin that allows commenters on your blog to check a box before commenting and get e-mail notification of further comments. You probably seen it already, it adds a checkbox “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail” in the comment form.

Admin Drop Down Menu

I’ve been this plugin since my first WordPress site, it is a must have for every WordPress site. It saves me so much time and clicks. It basically makes your secondary menu activate on mouseover. For example, instead of click Write, then click Page; you can mouseover Write and click Page (this will save one click and one pageload). Big time saver!

Adsense Deluxe

Adsense Deluxe is probably the best Adsense plugin available on the web. Very easy to use: first you define your ad code through the Admin options, then insert a HTML snippet (“”) into anywhere of your post content, and it will automatically repace it with your ad code.

Search Everything

Default WordPress search engine doesn’t search metadatas, static Pages, etc. This plugin allows you to search everything in the database. Of course, it comes with options, so you can set what to search.

Ajax Calendar

If you use calendar in your sidebar, consider this Ajax Calendar. Your visitor can browse through the calendar without refreshing the page.
Breadcrumb Navigation XT
Although not many sites use breadcrumb navigation now, but if you want, here is one:Breadcrumb Navigation XT. It basically lets you add a breabcrumb navigation to your site.

Google Sitemap Generator

If you need to generate a XML compliant sitemap for search engines, Google Sitemap Generator is the best choice (supported by most popular search engines: Google, Yahoo, Ask.com, and MSN).

Simple Recent Comments

Another must have plugin. In fact, it is in all my WordPress sites. It outputs a list of recent comment excerpt. You can install as WordPress plugin or simply include in your theme folder (no activation required). Simple!

Simple Tags

As of version 2.3, WordPress has a built-in tagging system, however with very limited features. Simple Tags gives you more features: type-ahead / auto suggestion tags, manage tags (rename, delete, add..), edit mass tags, dynamic tag cloud colors, and more!

WP Mailing List

Not sure if anyone would still signup newsletter since we have RSS now. But newsletter is the best way to inform your subscribers with new products and updates. I find this plugin will be useful if you run a WP eCommerce shop. It is not free (cost $14.99), but totally worth it (check out their features).

Category Tag Cloud

If you want to fake your categories into a tag cloud like what I did at Best Web Gallery, here is the plugin Category Tag Cloud. It is very easy to install and customize.

Paged Comments

This plugin is useful if you get a lot of comments on your blog. It breaks your comments into a number of pages. Imagine if your blog gets over a thousand of comments? You definitely need this plugin.

flickrRSS

This plugin allows you to easily display Flickr photos on your weblog. It supports user, public and group photostreams. The plugin is relatively easy to setup and configure via an options panel. It also has support for an image cache located on your server.

Theme Switcher

Theme Switcher allows your readers to switch among installed themes. This plugin is useful if you offer WordPress theme and you want to let your users to preview the themes. I use it to showcase my free WordPress themes.

How to inject javascript, iframe and malicious code in to index page and it’s solution!

Hello,

I hope the following information will be helpful for you.

Normally, The virus attacks following files on your server:

1.  index.php
2.  index.html
3.  main.php
4.  header.php
5.  footer.php

At the start or end of these files it will insert the  <IFRAME>,  javascript php or malicious encoded code:

What it does?
—————-
I can only guess. The code is calling a script on online-channels.info site. It can be sending traffic information. Maybe it is a first case of Internet marketing espionage? Or it can be trying to run some malicious code.

What it does?
———————–
He save your FTP password, acces you account, and instal in your index files, (Index from all directory) an <IFRAME> code that will open a virus page in your index of the forum.

How it’s done ?
——————-
This is a sophisticated operation, and the infection cycle is involved, but basically, the hacker(s) are setting up innocent looking sites (or using previously hacked sites where the owner is usually unaware of being compromised) and loading them with expensive hacking tools like Mpack. When someone visits that site, their browser is detected and attacked (browsers affected are IE, firefox and opera). The visitor is unaware that they may have a keylogger that sends the persons passwords ect to the hacker(s) and moves on. If the innocent visitor has an ftp or root password for any internet sites, the hackers use a program that goes to the persons site(s) and instantly adds the hidden iframe to every index type page. This is why there seems to be no indication that the site has been compromised, as the hackers already have the ftp or root passwords to login. And since they have at least your account ftp pass, whatever permissions your folders and files are set to make no difference.

After they put the iframe code into that person’s pages, anyone visiting that site will be redirected to the hackers infection site, where the person’s computer will be injected and infected. The hackers are depending on site owners not knowing their sites have been hacked so that the number of hacked sites will grow (as they have starting in Italy) into the tens of thousands… Please don’t think you can depend solely on your antivirus software to protect your computer. It more than likely won’t help you. For $1000 dollars, the russian hacking bulletin boards are offering Mpack with 1 year support and a GUARANTEE that virus programs will not catch the keyloggers. SO, keep your virus program updated, but don’t depend on it completely!

This way this hack is spreading fastly from one computer to another broadcasting the passwords to hackers.During my research in this, I even found some of the password files collected by the hack on some of the hacked server, where they pass this password file to thier tool to add the code. In some cases Google bots picks this files and you can even find the login details of FTP accounts and Server root login details in google.

How Do I got attacked  ??
—————————
1. Your computer or a computer you use to administrate your website gets infected with a virus or trojan.

2. That virus or trojan runs a process on the computer searching FTP applications and their databases for username and password combinations or just looking for username and passwords in files on the computer.

3. When a username and password is found, that information is e-mailed, or somehow sent to an individual or a group of individuals.

4. That individual or group of individuals then have access to your account login information. They proceed to connect to your account via FTP using the hostname, username, and password that the trojan/virus provided for them.

5. Once connected to FTP on your account, they download your index page, edit that index page, place a malicious piece of javascript code or iframe code into the index page, then reupload it to your account.

6. Your website is now infected with malicious javascript or iframe code, which can then be used to infect or track other visitors of your website.

Your computer being infected with a virus is not a direct result of your website being infected with a virus, or vice-versa. It is because of the type of virus or trojan that is installed on your computer, that your login information was compromised. This compromised data is what led to your website being infected.

How you got infected (Step 1) is completely up in the air. Perhaps you downloaded a program that was infected. Perhaps you received an e-mail that caused the infection. Perhaps you visited a website that caused the infection. There’s really no way to be absolutely certain of how this infection initially took place. The best thing you can do is preventive measures. Keep your anti-virus software up-to-date. Make sure the memory resident of the virus scanner stays running. Do routine virus scans on your computer just to be sure. Use anti-spyware software to keep tabs on possible trojans or key loggers that might be installed on your computer. Practice overall safe web-browsing. I recommend using only Firefox for your web browser and installing the NoScript Firefox addon to help prevent any malicious javascript from running in your browser.

All of this assumes that your account credentials were compromised due to a local virus or trojan. That may not be the case. I would bet that your credentials have been compromised in some way, but even that is not a given. Other ways for your credentials to be compromised is if you leave your username and password written down near your desk at work or at a coffee shop, if you leave it in plain view, someone else may be able to read that information and then your information is compromised. There’s really no way to know exactly how the information was compromised.

It’s also possible that there was no credential compromise at all. You may have an outdated script installed on your account or on your web server that allowed malicious users to gain access to your account and inject material into your website. You should always make sure that you are running the latest version of any scripts or applications you have on your website to prevent something like this from happening.

===============================================
What is solution now ?
===============================================

If you are facing this problem and your administrator says its only your account, just change the FTP password and it will stop

You must have removed the code as soon as it attack and change the file permission to READ ONLY or CHMODE 444 to make sure it never got attack again. Please Change the FTP Password immediately. Just changing password is not complete solution but is the first step.

Whats next, your password is leaked that means your computer is sending out the passwords, so I would suggest you to do a clean format first and then install any antivirus of spyware which you think could block it. But the best solution is to clean format the computer.

Just do the three things:

1) Change the FTP or root password of server.
2) Clean format the PC.
3)  Forum cleaning.
You can download file_check.php . Put it in your root of the forum and run it from the adress http://yourforumadress.com/file_check.php .
It usually add that IFRAME code after the “?>” of the PHP code. You`ll get some pages that you need to delete the IFRAME.
Now go to the index.template.php from Themes/your theme directory. Search where the <body> code start, and there you`ll find another IFRAME. Delete it (WARNING! Without ‘; from after the </IFRAME>.).
Now the forum is “clean”.

In some case, this “virus” make some modification in your database system. Make sure you checked you database and removed any suspicious code and take care in future, you dont visit any of the virus links made by this hack.

Hope it will work for you and if won’t please let us know where you found difficulty or failure. Thank you…

Upload large MySql file to phpMyAdmin

Hello friends,
Today I am going to give you an useful tutorial on uploading big database to phpmyadmin. Many times you have seen this error message at the time of loading database, “Got a packet bigger than ‘max_allowed_packet’ bytes”. It means you are not allowed to upload big database pack to phpmyadmin.

As a website owner or blogger you may want to import your MySQL dump from one server to another server database, but what you do if it exceeds the limit offered by phpMyAdmin. By default phpMyAdmin provides the upload limit specified in the php.ini file. You can increase this upload limit size by editing the php.ini file if you have access to it, generally if you are in a shared hosting you won’t be able to edit this file because it will affect all the accounts on that server and XeonBD won’t allow this. If you have shell access to your account you can import easily, see below for how to import using SSH.

Using BigDump.php (Recommended):
BigDump
is a script written by Alexey Ozerov for importing large mysql dumps. It’s a staggered MySQL dump importer, meaning the script executes only small part of the huge dump and restarts itself, the next session starts where the last was stopped. This process continues until it imports the whole database dump.

Download BigDump from here, http://www.ozerov.de/bigdump.zip

Steps:

1.Adjust the database configuration in this file
2. Drop the old tables on the target database if your dump doesn’t contain “DROP TABLE”
3. Create the working directory (e.g. dump) on your web-server
4. Upload bigdump.php and your dump files (.sql, .gz) via FTP to the working directory
5. Run the bigdump.php from your browser via URL like http://www.yourdomain.com/dump/bigdump.php
6. BigDump can start the next import session automatically if you enable the JavaScript
7. Wait for the script to finish, do not close the browser window
8. IMPORTANT: Remove bigdump.php and your dump files from the web-server

If you have completed the steps successfully you are done.

Using SSH:
Shared hosting account does not have shell access. If you have shell access you can use the following commands to dump your mysql database.
mysql -u [user] -p [password] -h [hostname] [databasename] <[file.sql]
